Choosing to wear goggles in the pool is a personal decision. Some swimmers are very comfortable in the water without them, while others feel goggles are a necessity. Here are three advantages to wearing goggles, we call them the Three C’s: Comfort, Clarity, and Confidence.
Comfort
The majority of swimming pools contain chemicals to help keep them maintained and sanitized. The most common element in swimming pools is chlorine. If not maintained correctly, or if one has a sensitivity to the chemical, it can cause red, irritated eyes. Here at Barron Swim School, our pool is outfitted with the latest UV Sanitation System. It not only kills germs, but provides drinking quality water, preventing “red eye” and skin irritation. Because of this, swimmers at Barron have the choice of wearing goggles! In conclusion, wearing goggles can provide protection against water getting into one’s eyes making the swimmer more comfortable in the water.
Clarity
Everyone at one time or another has opened their eyes underwater. Regardless if a swimmer is comfortable or not doing so, one does not see clearly underwater. Wearing goggles underwater will give a clear view making any swimming experience more enjoyable.
Confidence
Finally, wearing goggles can provide swimmers with confidence! This allows swimmers to swim faster and with more freedom. Goggles give swimmers the ability to clearly see the area around them, providing them with more confidence in the water.
During our Safety Weeks, we encourage students to attempt a class or a portion of the class without goggles. This is because we feel it is vital for our swimmers to know what water feels like on unprotected eyes. Chances are, if a swimmer falls or gets pushed into a body of water, they will not have goggles with them. We do not want the feeling of water in the eyes to cause panic. It is our goal for our students to be prepared in case of an emergency so they are able to get back to the wall or dock.
As stated in the beginning of this blog, wearing goggles is a personal choice. We do not recommend one over the other, so please consider what you feel is best for the comfort of your child.
